We took Indie out for one last day pheasant hunting. At 8 months old, she more than exceeded our expectations.

This double was not particularly difficult, but Indie is showing all of the promise in the field that we hoped for. Great nose, patience, and the drive the hunt and retrieve.

It is nearly impossible to hold a video camera AND shoot the rooster when it gets up. I had to apologize to Barley after this one got away.

Early on, a well bred lab will show the instinct to retrieve. Better yet, they will use their nose to locate the birds. You don't have to be a master trainer to have a good hunting dog.

I like tough dogs. Usually a good retriever will be so focused on doing their job that they don't notice when things are uncomfortable. But even the best dogs can be slowed down by a field infested with sand burrs. Barley took a few minutes to get used to these booties, but they saved the day...and her feet.
